GED stands for GEDCOM genealogy family history format data file. This type of file contains genealogical information about a person and all the meta data linked to it. GEDCOM uses a lineage-linked data model, which is centered around the nuclear family and the individual.
A GEDCOM file begins with a header section and comprises further of records sections and a trailer section. GEDCOM files are plain-text files and every line in the file begins with a level number.
