HQX stands for Macintosh BinHex Archive Format. BINHEX is a binary to hexadecimal file which is specific to Mac operating systems, and contains binary format converted to a text format so that these files can be easily transmitted as email attachments.
A BINHEX file always begins with a text line “(This file must be converted with Binhex 4.0)”. BINHEX files contain two forks of the Mac operating system i.e. the data fork and the resource fork from the Mac HFS file structure. The file is divided into three sections: the header, the data fork and the resource fork. Each section is separated by a two byte CRC checksum.
